coming back to the biographical facts is somewhat prosaic after having breached the boundaries of dreams through the works of Luc Bersauter.
It’s no surprise to hear that he’s from a working class background. Suffice to hear him speak with modesty and simplicity about his art, which he pursues with a passion. With Luc, there are no theatrics, only the humility of work and the intensity of research.

We might add that he wears his fifty years as others might wear a hat, with wit and style; he is from Alsasce, his Nordic roots provide a firm anchor to his subject matter, his artistic rigour,  his fascination in the Rhenish masters (his eyes light up at the mention of Bale!)

Luc creates with energy and vigour.

We can look back at a prodigious child discovering colour and form one inspiring Christmas day.
Do we need to know that he was bored within the rigid structure of his private school, that he‘s extravagantly talented, and understood from an early age that creativity can vanquish despair?

No, let’s leave all that for the post mortem. Bersauter is much too active to be a relic.

However, we can always go back with him to visit his past. Like many tales, the essential turning point is an all important encounter, magical and fortuitous.

The backdrop is perfectly adapted, a forest, a dark wood, full of hidden mysteries. This forest inexorably draws him, the eternal fugitive, rattling his chains, this forest, under torrential rain, this forest, peopled with shadows……

And there, on a bend, on a precipitous path, an easel. And a frail old man, completely focused, oblivious to his climatic surroundings and to the mediocrity of everyday life  and the humdrum of normal existence, Robert Breitweiser*. The rest of this story Ileave to your imagination

One other person was influential through Luc’s artistic journey of initiation. Jean Brenner helped guide his eye and his hand towards the canvas, to hurl his talent and imagination into his colourful work

Enough stories, now let his work tell you the rest…….

Welcome to the extravagant universe of Luc Bersauter’s imagery, following that fine line between a non-conformist artist and the tormented precision of a man who has dedicated himself to his painting as others might commit their soul to god or the devil.

*Robert Breitwieser (1899-1975) is a French painter from Alsasce.
Robert Breitwieser straddles two cultures, French and German. He had a solid grounding from the Hans Hofmann art school in  Munich, decisive meetings (eg in Paris 1929 he made friends with the Alsatian poet Jean-Paul de Dadelsen, whose portrait he painted), travels around Europe and much writing and critical reflection. Robert Breitwieser has left a rich and diverse body of work.
